In Six Shades of Gray, each instrument of the trio has its own solo movement, and these movements are intertwined with three trio movements. The solo movements are somewhat similar in character, lyrical and rather free. The three trio movements, in contrast, vary much more in character and length. As the title implies, the work could be thought of as a rotating view of the same image, or perhaps six different photographs of the same object or scene.
